You are probably aware of this: The card companies are using tracking software to follow the habits of customers, any out of pattern use triggers a refusal to to pay the merchant that allows the charge. The carders request a call to a 800 number by the cardholder to verify the transaction.
I believe Oracle supplies these databases also to the supermarkets tying them to check cashing behavior; linked to their "Club Savings" cards. Quite a loop!

I must admit to a dislike for the amount of information being shared about, for the changes in our culture this brings about... cameras on the roadside and in the shops and bars, alarms as standard, ID cards and excessive ID checks to join a video rental club... it's all rather too 'Big Brother' isn't it?

People say, 'Well, if you have nothing to hide -- if you don't break the law -- then all this won't bother you'

That is an inane statement; it's all very well until laws change or come about so that you inadvertently break them -- and get caught.

Look at speed cameras, for example: you may not intend to break the speed limit - or when you are not representing the same hazard, you'll get caught regardless of the specific situation. For example, a 20mph outside a school is perhaps a good thing during school hours -- but makes no sense during the night or school holidays.

This may mean that the camera is used mor as a means of earning revenue than catching immoral criminals!
