Intolerance: Driver Banned for Gesture to Camera

An UK court on Monday 2006-01-09 severely penalised a motorist for the crime of 'showing disrespect to a mobile speed camera van'. The device had photographed Mr.Sean Toehill, 21, driving 22 MPH in a 40 MPH zone but police became enraged when they noticed he had given the camera a 'V-sign.' Officers were dispatched to his home two days later to present charges which the Cupar Sheriff Court in Fife, Scotland upheld on Monday. The court suspended Mr.Toehill's right to drive for a year and imposed a 90.00_GBP fine.
'I can't believe that speed cameras can be used in this way,' Mr.Toehill, a North Sea oil worker, told 'The London Telegraph' Newspaper. 'I thought they were to catch speeding drivers.'
Mr.Toehill plans to appeal the ruling. Police Capture Victory Signs 'UK Speed Camera Tickets Non-Speeding Protester Annoyed by defiant gesture, speed camera issues ticket to non-speeding driver.', The Newspaper.com, 2006-01-11
